Pace of Billings Decline Slows
The Architecture Billings Index score for September was 47.0, gaining 7 points after remaining at 40.0 from June through August.
“Despite the multi-family residential sector showing signs of improvement, overall business conditions are recovering at a disappointingly slow pace,” said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA, PhD.
In September the project inquiries index was 57.2, up from 51.6 the previous month. The design contracts index was 48.9, up from 46.0.
Regional averages all made gains in September.
August | September | |
West | 41.3 | 45.6 |
South | 41.6 | 43.7 |
Midwest | 41.7 | 45.6 |
Northeast | 33.9 | 41.5 |
Baker added, “Other sectors may begin to stabilize in the coming months, but across the board improvement shouldn’t be expected until the economic impact of the pandemic subsides significantly.”
